Annual Campbell Lecture

Campbell_Ishbel

The Campbell Lecture forms a key part of the WiSET+ visibility project, which aims to showcase the work of female scientists at all career stages both locally and internationally. It is named in honour of Ishbel Campbell (1906-1997), a reader in Chemistry, who was one of the founding academics of the University of Southampton, a committed teacher and an inspiration for women in science.

This year, Penny Endersby, the Chief Executive of the Met Office, will give a talk titled “The appliance of science in government: 1993-2019.” This talk will be held on Wednesday 13th March at 2pm, with refreshments afterwards.

The talk will take a retrospective look over Penny’s 25 year career, from her time as an armour researcher to her present role as Chief Executive of the Met Office. She will link her research with world events and the role of government was playing at the time. The journey is both technical and personal, tracking her development from a bench scientist and new graduate through to being a senior leader responsible for thousands of staff.
